Objective:

Each year over 70,000 health insurance professionals across the country take AHIP’s Medicare Training to satisfy government-mandated compliance requirements. AHIP sought to leverage its strong educational brand to expand its reach in other areas of health-insurance professional development.

In 2011, AHIP hired Jon Aleckson with a directive to improve its professional development department’s course development processes, leadership, and staffing. Aleckson was tasked with embedding protocols and best practices, project charters for interdepartmental collaboration, instilling quality standards for learning, systematizing distinctions between A, B, and C-level products, and instilling project management protocols at a quality level determined by the project charter.

Solution:

Aleckson made a recommendation on a new head for AHIP’s professional development department, and consulted on a staffing reorganization of the department. AHIP stood up a new course-development process with standardized branding, course templates, and workflow management, improving the quality ratings of its training.

After the overhaul of AHIP’s learning content development, the focus of the engagement shifted toward the deployment of a revamped Medicare compliance-training system for insurance agents. Aleckson supervised the implementation of a “hub and spoke” network of integrated learning-management system instances. In the compliance-training system, AHIP’s hub delivers training to learners affiliated with all the major health insurance plans in the United States. These learners are then seamlessly transferred to spoke systems customized to the health plans’ training programs. Results are ultimately reported to governmental compliance systems.

Results:

The new compliance-training system launched in March 2012 and has received rave reviews from health plan members, brokers, employees, and AHIP administrators. The Web Courseworks partnership with AHIP continues to develop, and includes recent work on an Affordable Care Act training system and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training to complement the Medicare training delivered through the compliance-training system.
